Kaimu Beach Park
Kaimu Black Sand Beach was one of the most popular black sand beaches on the island. Beginning in 1990, the constant flow of lava slowly filled the bay and extended the land by 300 meters. The old beach is no longer there. You can walk out over the lava field to the new beach. The contrast of the destruction of the lava and the new growth is amazing. The new beach is younger than me! How often can you say you are standing on land younger than you? (Obviously only accurate if you were born before 1990.)
This is not a beach where you can swim. The current is too strong. However, it is an area filled with beauty and wonder. It actually moved me to tears as I sat and listened to the waves crashing into the new shore.
