Washi Tape Easter Eggs

YOU ONLY NEED 3 THINGS TO MAKE THESE WASHI TAPE EASTER EGGS – FOAM EGGS, WASHI TAPE AND MOD PODGE!

You can never have too much Washi Tape!

I got this pretty tape from Pick Your Plum last Easter.  Simply wrap your egg with the tape until completely covered.

 Once the egg has been covered, you want to make sure it STAYS covered.  I applied a light coat of Mod Podge to keep the tape in place.

Aren’t they cute?  I can’t decide which is my favorite!

You can grow your own Crystal Hearts too by following these simple steps!

First, the important stuff.  Children should be monitored closely when dealing with chemicals.  These are NOT edible.  I repeat, NOT EDIBLE.

Here’s what you need to grow your own Crystal Hearts!

• Borax (Wal-mart carries it by the laundry detergent)
• Water
• Pipe cleaners
• Fishing line
• Wood skewers
• Quart size mason jar or large pot
• Food coloring (optional)

1. Shape your pipe cleaner into a heart.  Fold pipe cleaner in half.  Then bring the ends together and twist forming the heart.
2. Attach a piece of fishing line to the heart shaped pipe cleaner.  Hang the heart from the wood skewer over the mason jar.
3. Boil hot water.  The ratio of water to borax is 3 cups water to 9 tablespoons of borax.
4. Once water is boiling, add borax. 
5. Stir until borax is completely dissolved in the water.
6. Pour mixture into the mason jar.  Be sure the pipe cleaner is not touching the sides or bottom of the jar.
7. Optional:  If you want to use food coloring, now would be the time to add it to the mixture.  There is no exact amount of food coloring to add.  It will vary from brand to brand.  More is probably better than less.
8. Allow to sit in mixture over night.
9. Remove from the mixture.  The crystal will detach easily from the fishing line for a nice clean shape.

We did not add any food coloring to these hearts.  I love how you can see the red through the crystals.

The pink heart shown at the beginning of the post is from using red food coloring.

Glow in the Dark Pumpkin Balloons

I’ve been wanting to try to make these Glow in the Dark Pumpkin Balloons for a couple of years.  But every time Halloween rolls around, I get swept up in the holiday flurry and completely forget about them!  Last year, I added it to my phone to remind me.  

You will not believe how easy and fun these fun balloons!

At first, I thought that a small glow stick would do the trick.  Unfortunately, the light is not bright enough to be seen all the way through the balloon.  I needed an actual light.  

That’s when I found these fun little LED lights on Amazon. (they have blinking and non-blinking options)
Here is another option of LED balloon lights that you might like. (these are not the ones I used)

These little LED lights around about 1.5 inches long and narrow enough to fit into the balloon.  The light simply twists on and if you are careful, you can twist it off while still in the balloon.  We tested them and left them on in the balloons just to see if it damaged the latex.  

No issues at all!  AND they stayed lit for 48 hours!

To start, twist the light on and place in the orange balloon.  Blow up the balloon (or fill with helium) with light inside.  Set the balloon aside.

I created jack o lantern faces on my Cricut Explore.  Since most people do not have a Cricut, I try to stick to posts that even you can do.  

I cut out the faces on black adhesive vinyl and attached them to the filled balloons.  You can draw your own faces on the back of the black vinyl and cut with scissors.

I just love how these turned out!  I’m going to fill them with helium and line the porch on Halloween!

What do you think?  Super fun, right?!  I even let Reed play with the black vinyl and create his own!

DIY Snowball Fight

It took me a couple of tried to get the hang of making these fluffy balls of fake snow.  But once I got it down, I was able to whip through them.

Materials needed to create your own DIY Snowball Fight

• Yarn
• Pom Pom Maker
• Scissors
• Embroidery thread
• Bucket
• Adhesive Vinyl (optional)

Begin by pulling out the arches on one side of the pom maker.  Start wrapping your yarn around the arches.  {I wrapped mine pretty thick so they would be extra fluffy!}

Close that side of the Pom maker and open the other arches.  Continue to wrap your yarn as you did in the step above.  Now you are going to cut down the middle of the yarn.

Once it is cut, it will look like this.

{I think it looks like the mouth of Bumble, the Abominable Snowman, in Rudolf – LOL}

Next, place the Pom maker between your knees.  Take your embroidery thread and wrap it through the middle (where you just cut).  Tightly knot it.  Repeat a couple of times for good measure.

Once you are certain it is secure, carefully open the arches.

Gently, pull apart the Pom Maker and trim the excess thread and yarn so your pom looks presentable.

Continue making poms until you have enough to have a really good snowball fight!

With summer in full effect, we have been looking for creative ways to stay cool and have fun.  I mean seriously.  I can only go to the pool so many times.  Reed and I came up with Water Balloon Olympics!  Little kids, big kids, and adults can participate in the fun.  And it only costs a few bucks for the supplies!

Our contest includes three different games to get you started!  However, this can be adapted or changed easily.

All you need are water balloons, plastic spoons, and two different sized hula hoops.

Event #1 is Water Balloon Toss Across.  Two people stand one foot away from each other and toss the water balloon.  After each person catches the balloon, that person takes a step back and throws it to the other person.  This back and forth continues until the balloon pops.  Whoever stays dry is the winner.

For larger groups, the team that makes it the furthest distance from each other without popping the balloon wins!

Event #2 is Spoon Races.  We made smaller water balloons for this so they were easier to manage. But if you are up for a challenge, keep them normal size!  Set a start line.  Each person has a plastic spoon and water balloon.  Every time you drop the balloon, you have to go back to the beginning and get a new one. First one to cross the finish line without popping the balloon is the winner!

Event #3 is Ring Toss.  This is where the hula hoops come in.  We placed the two hula hoops in the grass.  The larger one was about 8 feet away.  The smaller one was about 12 feet away.  Each person gets 5 balloons to toss.  The larger hoop is worth 25 points and the smaller hoop is worth 50 points.  Person with the most points wins!

You can add to these games with your own versions too!  This is a great concept for summer birthday parties or neighborhood cookouts!

Last summer Reed and his friends set up a lemonade and popsicle stand outside of our house. They made $40 in an hour! I was never that successful back in the day. He is too old for that now (he just reminded me). But I thought these would be fun for the kids this summer!

The Easter Bunny brought these tattoo pens but I think my sister and I had just as much fun with them!  They provide you with some stencils but they weren’t very high quality and limited designs.  Jennifer and I figured we could do way better.  She came up with these fun summer designs to dress up your feet and arms!

A little about the pens – they are totally non-toxic and safe to use!  The tattoo held up through a couple of hands washings but came off in the shower/bath later that day.  I know some people get concerned by these things. 

(Rumor has it the Easter Bunny found these at Target.  They were only a couple of dollars.)

Using your DIY Tattoo Pen Stencils

First and foremost, download the SVG file below.  Using adhesive vinyl and your favorite cutting machine, cut the stencils.  You can totally trace them on the vinyl and cut with scissors too.  The designs are not super intricate.

Weed out the middle of the stencil.  Gently remove the backing and apply to skin where you want to place the tattoo.  Begin coloring with tattoo pens.

Once done coloring, carefully peel adhesive vinyl away from skin.

How fun is that?!  Tennley loved being our model.

Not only do they look cool, but the glow stick inside the bubbles MAKES them cool.  They look like honest to goodness lightsabers!

Here’s what you need to make your own bubble wand lightsabers:

Bubble wands

Silver duct tape

Black buttons

Hot glue gun

Scissors

Glow sticks (the fat ones if you can find them)

I think these lightsaber bubble wands are these easiest kids crafts I’ve ever put together.  Depending on where you buy the bubbles, the handle may look slightly different.  These particular bubble wands were purchased at Michaels.

Wrap the silver duct tape around the largest part of the handle.

Cut another piece of tape about 5 inches in length.  Cut that piece in half length wise.  Wrap around the top of the handle.

Next, turn on your hot glue gun.  Add a single black button to the top part of the handle (where you just taped) using hot glue.

Now comes the fun part.  Carefully pour out about 1/3 of the bubble solution in the wand.  Break your glow stick to activate the glow.  Place the glow stick inside the bubble wand.

How stinkin’ cool is that?!  If you’re wondering why the purple lightsaber?  Well apparently Mace Windu’s lightsaber was purple.  Who knew?

I’m not sure who was more excited, my husband or my son!  I just love how they turned out!

And don’t they look cool in the dark?  These would be so much fun for after dark this summer!
