Old Fashioned Lace Cookies - just like Grandma used to make! #cookies #recipes #christmascookies

A couple of weeks ago, one of my co-workers found a treasure trove of recipes from the 1960s.  While perusing the cache, I came across a recipe for Lace Cookies.  Do you remember those?  My grandma used to make them to hang on the Christmas tree when we were little.  I had to try my hand at these Old Fashioned Lace Cookies.  Here’s how they turned out!

The lights from the Christmas tree illuminate the lattice work of these cookies.  Aren’t they fun?!

This recipe is from Karo Corn Syrup.  It is NOT available on their website!

The recipe creates a thin, crispy wafer with an elegant, dainty look!

Make your own Old Fashioned Lace Cookies

Ingredients:

1 cup sifted flour
1 cup chopped flaked coconut or nuts
1/2 cup Karo Crystal Clear Syrup
1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1/2 cup margarine
1 tsp vanilla

Directions:

  1. Mix flour and coconut.  Combine Karo, brown sugar, and margarine in a heavy saucepan.  Bring to boil over medium heat, stirring constantly
  2. Remove from heat.  Gladually blend in the flour mixture, then vanilla.
  3. Drop onto a foil covered cookie sheet by the teaspoonful.
  4. Bake in oven at 350 degrees for 8-10 minutes.
  5. Remove foil and place cookies on a rack covered with absorbent paper.

Special note:  The first time I made this recipe, I did not use the absorbent paper.  BIG mistake!  They were so greasy and difficult to stomach.  Save yourself the heartache and use the absorbent paper.  You will thank me in the end.

I omitted the coconut because I am not a fan {unless it’s in a piña colada – hee hee}.  I think drizzled chocolate would make these delish! Add your own flare!

I also think they would make great gift tags!  They look beautiful against the Christmas lights on the tree.

Have you ever made Lace Cookies?
