Handpainted Halloween Entry Sign | Easy Halloween Decor Idea

I shared this tutorial for my Handpainted Halloween Entry Sign at the CSI Project earlier this week. I really loved the black and white Halloween theme I went with this year. My inspiration was “The Raven” by Edgar Allen Poe. {Check out my front porch and wreath!} But it needed something a little more. So I added “The Broom Stops Here” entry sign!

Here’s what you need:Unfinished wood craft signAcrylic paintVinyl and Silhouette CameoVasolineSandpaperRibbon

I painted the wood sign in an antique white to match my pumpkins on the porch. I found these cute images in the Silhouette library. {“The Broom Stops Here” by Loni Stevens #13194 and the Harry Potter broom #26618} The sign measures 12 inches across and 9 inches at its peak. The edge of the scallop are about 6 inches high. Once I measured the sign, I expanded the image to the appropriate size and added the broom at the top. I rotated the broom 10 degrees to get it straighter.

Load your vinyl and cut the image.Remove the excess vinyl. Using the transfer paper, transfer the image to your sign.

Use your scraper to make sure the vinyl has firmly adhered to the sign. Slowly, remove the transfer paper.

I wanted the sign to looked distressed and antiqued. I used a technique that I used on my Antique Window Raven Decoration. Apply a small amount of vaseline to the areas you want to distress.

Then coat with black paint.

Once the paint is dry, you can remove the vinyl letters and broom image.

Using your sandpaper, lightly rub the areas where you applied the vasoline.Since I wanted the sign to look old and distressed, I was ok that some of the black bled into the letters.
