If I said it was easy, I’d be lying.  I’m not a patient person.  I’m much more the quick crafting type.  There’s something about refinishing furniture that is as satisfying as quilting.  Watching the pieces slowly come together to create something beautiful is amazing in any capacity.  I took our old cheap coffee table and turned it into a piece of art!  I’m simply IN LOVE with my Farmhouse-Style Coffee Table Makeover!

This is the fourth post of my Power Tools for Mommies series.  {If you missed any of the previous posts, you can catch them here, here and here.}

We’ve had this crappy old coffee table for ages.  It’s been through four moves and a teething toddler. {Yes, he chewed on furniture like a little beaver.}  It was getting old and rickety and desperately needed some lovin’.

I took the table apart and used my Ryobi 18 volt One+ Corner Cat Finish Sander to take the old finish off the table.

Once it was all sanded down, I started painting it a country white color.

My vision for the table was simple.  I wanted a rustic looking farmhouse-style finish to give it a little character.  I planned to paint the whole thing white and then create a planked table top.  We headed to Home Depot and picked up some 1×4’s.  I wanted the table top to over hang about an inch and a half on all sides.

At SNAP conference, Ana White said, “If you can use a sewing machine, then you can operate a miter saw.”  I was empowered.

I busted out my Ryobi 10 inch compound miter saw and got to cutting.  If it is possible to be in love with a power tool, then I am smitten.  This thing is so smooth and easy to handle!  The laser helps maintain a straight cut which is something I struggled with when using the circular saw.

Once my wood was cut, I laid it out and used wood glue to bind it together.  That way I could work with it all in one piece when it was time to screw it to the old table top.

After the wood glue cured, I placed the old table top, right side down on the wood planks.  We measured to get it centered and marked it.  Then I took the old table top and began drilling holes so I could secure it was screws.

Drilled a total of 36 holes – 6 holes in each of the 6 boards.  {Two in at each end and two in the middle.}  Then I re-positioned the old top onto the new top and screwed it down.

Once the table top was attached, I got to the serious business of prepping, staining and varnishing the new top.  I knew before I put it back together that I was happy with it but I didn’t think I would love it as much as I do!

It isn’t perfect and that’s part of it’s charm!  I love all of the little imperfections!
