DIY Photo Pen Holder | Father’s Day Gift Idea

Sponsored by Ryobi Tools

Kyle will be starting his new job soon.  And with that new job, comes a new office which is going to need a little decorating.  With Father’s Day around the corner, I thought I could use my brand new power tool “skillz” and create this DIY Photo Pen Holder!

Wanna make your own DIY Photo Pen Holder?

Here’s what you need:

Wood blocks

Sand block {220 fine grit}

18V One+ Cordless Drill

1/2 inch drill bit

Rubber gloves

Stain

Oil based paint brush

Old T-shirt

Photos of Dad and Kiddo

Scissors

Mod Podge

Sponge brush

My hunt for 4×4 square blocks was fruitless.  I had to get a little creative.  Thankfully, I had another creative mind with me, Kelly from Live.Laugh.Rowe.  When I couldn’t find what I was looking for, I decided to purchase a wooden mail post.  The lumber yard guy informed me that they couldn’t cut something that thick.  {Grrrr}  Kelly offered up the use of her miter saw and I headed over to her place.  {Thanks Kelly!!}  We were able to use her Ryobi Miter Saw to cut the mail post into wood blocks.

I began by measuring out the blocks.  It was then I noticed that the mail post was only 3×3.  Oh well.  I rolled with it.

I measured out the blocks 3x3x3 – allowing for the 1mm saw blade.

Then we fired up the miter saw and began cutting.  The awesome thing about this miter saw is it has a laser beam guide to ensure a clean and precise cut.

After I cut out the blocks, I sanded the edges.

Then I busted out my new best friend.  Allow me to introduce you to the Ryobi 18V One+ Cordless Drill!  This bad boy is so cool!  It even has a level on top so you can ensure precise drilling!  The 24 position clutch and two speeds accommodates to hold a range of drill bit sizes.  I love that it’s light weight and easy to use!

Isn’t she pretty?  I’ve named her Gizmo!  hee hee

Gizmo and I set up to begin drilling holes in the wood block.  Mark out your pen holes with a pencil.  {I eyeballed this but in retrospect, I should have measured it.}  I used a 1/2 inch drill bit because it was the largest and would easily accommodate a pen.  To load the drill bit, place the switch trigger {the button with the arrows on either side of the drill} to the center position.  Open the chuck jaws and insert the drill bit.  Tighten the chuck jaws.  Rotate the chuck body back to LOCK.

Set the drill speed to 1.  Make sure you set the switch trigger to forward.  Apply pressure and press the trigger.  Drill about 3/4 quarters of the way through the wood.

That’s it!

Once all the holes are drilled, you can prep for staining.  Gently sand off any rough edges in the direction of the wood grain.  Make sure your area is clear of saw dust before you begin staining.

Don your rubber gloves.  {That’s fancy talk for put them on.}  Open your stain and stir.  Apply the stain to the pen holder.

Let sit for 5-15 minutes to allow the stain to set in the wood.

Remove any excess stain with the old t-shirt.  Wipe in the direction of the wood grain.

Allow to dry overnight.

I picked out four pictures of Reed and Kyle and sized them to 2.75×2.75.  Once they were edited to my satisfaction, I printed them out.

Using your Mod Podge, coat the back of the picture and smooth onto the side of the pen holder.  Repeat this process for the remaining three sides.  Let sit for an hour.

After it dries, coat the whole thing in Mod Podge Super Gloss and allow to dry.

Kyle is going to love this!  Thankfully, he doesn’t read my blog so he won’t see it until Father’s Day – ha!  And I bet your husband thinks it’s hot that you used power tools to create his Father’s Day gift!
