I am so excited to be here at Create.Craft.Love. today to share my Pom Pom Christmas Wreath! My name is Sarah, and I blog at Bombshell Bling. Jill is on my short list of my top four favorite wreath making bloggers ever! Seriously. There are four people who blow me away EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. and Jill is right up there at the top of that list! For that reason, I am incredibly honored that she would invite me to contribute to this Winter Wreath Workshop! Today I am going to show you how I made my Pom Pom Christmas Wreath.
I am loving this Pom Pom Christmas Wreath because it reminds me of some of the things that my mom used to make. I am usually all about the bright and blingy (Shocking, I know..), but today I was checking out my ridiculously huge and unorganized craft stash and the red boas, glitter baubles, and shiny ribbon weren’t calling my name for once. Today this simple polka dot fabric practically jumped into my arms, dragging the pom pom trim along with it.
Perhaps I have just been feeling nostalgic lately. My mother passed away eleven years ago after a 13 year battle with breast cancer, and now my little family is living with my father in his big, empty house. He gives us a roof over our heads and we add some excitment into his life, not to mention better meals! My mom was a “holiday mom” all the way, and she always made everything so special. I love combining her holiday decorations with mine. I will link to a very personal post that I entitled “What My Mother’s Battle with Breast Cancer Taught Me About True Beauty” at the bottom of this post, along with the Multigenerational Holiday Home Tour that I did last year showcasing our home at Christmastime, all decked out in decorations made or owned by three generations of women. Anyway, wishing my mom was with my kids on Halloween and now gearing up for Christmas just got me in the mood to make something simple, cheerful, and homey. Basically, I wanted to make something that was just like my mom!
To make this simple, cheery wreath you will need the following items:
* 18 inch Floracraft styrofoam wreath form
* 1/2 yard – 3/4 yard red polka dot fabric
* approximately 3.5 yards white and green pom pom trims
* hot glue gun and hot glue (Be careful not to burn yourself!)
Begin by tearing the fabric into wide strips. That’s right, I said tearing. Measure your desired width (mine were about 3 inches wide). Snip the end of the strip and then grab it and tear. It’ll be almost perfectly straight. Yes, it’ll have a frayed edge, but that’s part of this wreath’s “look,” so that’s ok!
Use the hot glue to glue the end of your strip to the back of the wreath. Now tightly wrap it around the wreath form, overlapping the strips a bit as you go.
When you get to the end of a strip just glue it down and glue another one right on top and start wrapping. (It is obviously best to try to do this on the back or even side of the wreath.) Continue until the entire wreath form is covered in fabric.
Glue down the end of the last strip.
Glue one end of your green pom pom trim to the back of the wreath.
Wrap the pom pom trim around the entire wreath. DO NOT GLUE ANYTHING YET, other than the end that you glued initially. Wiggle and readjust things until everything is evenly spaced and you like the placement of it. Now glue down THE OTHER END to the back of the wreath. Go back and dab glue on each wrap ON THE BACK OF THE WREATH just to hold everything in place.
Repeat this process with the white pom pom trim. BE SURE you have it lined up right in the back before you glue down the first end. It was a little confusing the way it crossed in the back but not the front. Then just twist, adjust, and glue, just as you did with the green pom pom trim.
You are DONE! Can you believe it?
