Fabric Wrapped Embroidery Hoop

When I first started with my embroidery obsession, I couldn’t decide how to display all of the designs I had planned in my head!  I love the hoops.  I love the symmetry.  I love that it’s not square or rectangle like every other frame you see at the store.  I have seen painted wooden hoops which I think look amazing.  But I wanted to bring in some accent colors.  Something that would make this handmade piece “pop”.  This Fabric Wrapped Embroidery Hoop will display your needlework in style!  Even my non-frilly, rustic, manly man of a husband thought this was cool!

This is such an easy and fun project!  It will cost less than $5 to make three of these!  I was able to make three wrapped frames in under 20 minutes.

MATERIALS NEEDED FOR FABRIC WRAPPED EMBROIDERY HOOP

  • 7 inch wooden embroidery hoop
  • Fat quarter of fabric
  • Dritz Cutting Mat
  • Olfa rotary cutter – (not the same as pictured but this one is easier to work with)
  • Hot glue gun

All you need is a fat quarter of fabric, wooden hoops and a little hot glue.

Begin by ironing your fat quarter.  Using a rotary cutter and self healing cutting mat, cut your fabric into 1 inch strips.  If you cut vertically, you will only need 4 of these strips to wrap the 6 or 7 inch frame.

Plug in your hot glue gun and let it warm up.  Take the end of the fabric strip, glue to the wood hoop and begin wrapping.  Be careful not to burn your fingers!  Mine are pretty much numb from years of crafting.  When you come to the end of the fabric strip, hot glue in place.

Repeat this process until the frame is covered.  When you reach the other side of the embroidery hoop, trim the excess and hot glue in place.

I did not wrap the inner hoop since it will be hidden by the needlework.

Center the embroidery piece onto the inner frame and carefully cover with the fabric wrapped embroidery hoop.  The dried hot glue globs actually help stabilize and hold the fabric in place.

Flip the whole thing over and trim away the excess fabric.

I LOVE how it turned out!  I think the fabric wrapped embroidery hoop really pulls whole thing together!

This would make an awesome Mother’s Day gift.  Go into her old embroidery stash (because you know she has a ton sitting around in a box somewhere).  Grab some wooden hoops and frame them for her!  Then it is a great collaboration of your hardwork and hers.  And what mother wouldn’t love that?!
