Hi everyone!

It’s Sarah (from Becoming Martha) here again with a fun project for you to create for Valentine’s Day.

This die cut wood keychain is the perfect Valentine's Day gift and is easy to make with the Cricut Explore!

This die cut wood keychain doesn’t look at all like something you could make at home, and would make a great gift for Dad or grandpas – you can change the text to say I(heart)Dad or whatever you like, too!

All you need for this project is:

  • Adhesive backed wood paper
  • thick chipboard
  • Cricut Explore deep cut blade
  • Minwax wood stain wipes
  • Split ring
  • Jump rings
  • Short piece of chain

To start, head to the Cricut Design Space, and open a new document.  I typed the words “I” and “YOU” in the Extreme Font, and inserted a heart from the image library. I overlapped the letters, and then added a circle (from the Insert Shapes menu), which was overlapped as well.  Then I welded the whole thing.

I added another small circle to the inside of the other circle, and then attached the whole thing.  This way, a loop will  be created for the jump ring to go through.

Place the Cricut deep cut housing and blade in your machine, and put your settings on chipboard (under the Custom menu) for the first cut.  After this, I changed the setting to cardstock+ and cut the wood paper.  It cut so smoothly!  It was amazing!

Here are both pieces after they were cut.  The wood paper is adhesive backed, so I peeled it off and stuck it onto the chipboard.

Since the wood paper is actual real wood, it’s stainable and paintable, just like any other wood would be.  I had some of these stain wipes on hand so I used those to stain the keychain a deep walnut colour.  However, there was way too much stain on a wipe, so I just opened the package and dabbed the keychain on the opening, rather than take a whole wipe out of the package.  After a minute or two, I used a paper towel to wipe the excess stain off the wood cut.

After that, all that is left is to attach the chain to the wood cut and the split ring.  Isn’t it adorable?  Think of all of the options you could create with this!

And I would also love it if you follow along with my new series – it’s all about taking those mountains of digital photos and turning them into beautiful family yearbooks.  Part I and Part II are up now!
