Shark Tank Costume

Ever since Shark Week became a thing (thank you, Discovery Channel!) in August, sharks have been the rage, and this shark costume is perfect for so many reasons.

Cute, affordable and could even be made to look a little scary if you are going for more the the scary attack shark costume vibe.

We found a wonderful online shark costume tutorial, you can find it here! We did make a couple of modifications. The pattern called for red felt to be sewn to the mouth hole and an oval cut out for the head. Instead, we added the red to the back of the mouth. You can see that in the pictures below.

We also used gray felt for the body of the shark. I felt like it keeps its form better than whatever material was used in the tutorial.

He wanted to show you guys what it would look like if he was actually swimming in the water! HA! I could have probably stuffed the dorsal fin with more pillow stuffing so it would stand up straighter. But he seems perfectly happy with how it turned out!

I got this book for Christmas and just had to share it with all of you.  Sometimes I get things and just want to talk about them and this is one of those things.  (This is not paid content.) My mother taught me to cross stitch when I was eight years old.  I cross stitched pillows for my Tri Delta little sisters when I was in college.  Baseball playoffs make me nervous so I like to cross stitch to give myself something to do.  This year for Christmas, I cross stitched a little something for all of my office staff.  Seriously.  I love it.  So when I opened the Stitch People book from my sister I was so excited!  

Cross Stitching with Stitch People

Stitch People is like playing with paper dolls.  There are all sorts of combinations and pairings you can choose from to customize the portrait you are creating.  She’s even included pets, hobbies, and fonts for you to choose from to really make it special.

Lizzy begins the book with basic cross stitching information and how to create a pattern using the book.  She even provides step by step tutorials for the more complicated stitches.

She even provides blank cross stitch templates to work your pattern.  This book is filled with different faces and body types to mix and match.

You can customize it further by adding something related to their hobbies!

Is that not THE cutest?!  I am having so much fun creating my own little patterns.  The book also includes several page full of different fonts to use in your portraits.

I went through all of my embroidery floss and decided to create my own specialized box specifically for working with these patterns.  Lizzy outlines several color palettes for skin and hair color in the back of the book.  I took my book to Michaels and grabbed the colors I was missing plus a new box for storage.

I cut the pattern for the outside of the box with my Cricut Maker!  You can learn more about Cricut HERE!  Can you believe how small those cuts are?

Little Zipper Bow Pouch

First of all, can we just take a second to admire the gorgeous fabric from Riley Blake and Cricut?  I am in LOVE with this fabric line!  It’s so bright and cheerful.  Anything made with these textiles is sure to bring a smile to the recipient’s face!

The sewing projects are my favorite addition with the Cricut Maker!  The machine comes with the rotary blade and the new pink fabric mat.  Throughout the Make-a-thon event we were told not to scrape off the fabric threads that stick to the mat.  It actually pushes the fibers into the adhesive and makes the mat less effective.  For those of you with OCD, you just have to deal with it or use your transfer tape to clean it.  I have purposely NOT cleaned mine to show you how well it will continue to cut.

To date, this mat has made 12 different projects and I have not cleaned it once!

Each sewing pattern includes a PDF file with materials and instructions that can be printed and taken to the fabric store.

For this project, each step includes a picture which makes it super easy to follow.  The beauty shot from Cricut does not show the adorable bow but I included it in mine because it was just too cute!

I ended up giving this to my sister for her birthday and she loved it!  I can’t wait to make Christmas presents for everyone!

The Cricut Maker makes sewing fun again!  I love to sew.  But I HATE to cut the pattern.  Without fail, I rip the tissue paper pattern.  And you can never get that pattern to fit back in the packet again.  With the Maker, all I have to do is cut to the size of the mat, load it in the machine and let the machine take it from there.

The fabric marker is amazing!

One of the awesome features of the new device, is the washable fabric pen.  If you are new to sewing, the pen will mark and number your pieces.  Make sure you put your fabric down on the mat, printed side down.  For all patterns with markings, Cricut has mirrored the pieces you will see on the cutting mat.

It labels the folds and the sewing lines which makes assembly a breeze!  The patterns that have the fabric marker lines can be turned off for those of you who are more experienced.  I’m working on a Design Space video series so more on that to come!

What about the rotary blade?

Now let’s talk about the rotary blade.  This thing cuts fabric like butter.  The rotary blade comes with the Cricut Maker.  I made five of these little cosmetic bags in 75 minutes the other night.  The rotary blade is only compatible with the Cricut Maker machine.  Look at these clean lines!

That special pink mat…

The pink fabric mat is a new addition.  This mat is made of special adhesive.  If you scrape the fabric fringe from the mat, you will actually press it into the mat.  This will ruin the cut.  Cricut suggests using the transfer tape to remove any excess or unwanted fabric scraps.  You should also take special care NOT to touch it with your hands.  The oil in your hands can ruin the adhesive and make the mat less sticky much faster.

Cricut has take special time and care into creating a fun sewing experience for novice to expert sewists!  I cannot wait to dig into some more of these projects and create some of my own!

Here’s what you need to make your own Valentine Hoop Art!

Valentine fabric
Felt (coordinating with your fabric)
7 inch wooden embroidery hoops
Embroidery floss
Needle
Ribbon

Cut your fabric into 10 inch by 10 inch squares.  Be sure to iron out any folds or wrinkles first!

Place fabric in wooden embroidery hoop.

Cut out felt hearts.  You can do this by tracing or the fold and cut method you were taught in elementary school.  I fold and cut mine.

Place felt heart in the middle of the embroidery hoop and pin in place.

Begin stitching your heart in place.  I chose to do a broken straight stitch around the edge of the felt heart.

Once that was complete, I stitched “be mine” in the middle of the heart.  You can add whatever sentiment you want.

Flip the embroidery hoop over and trim off the excess fabric around the edges.

To finish it off, I added a cute ribbon to the top of the hoop to obscure the hinge.

Aren’t these the cutest things ever?!  It only took me an hour to complete 3 of these.  I love the one with me and Kyle’s initials in the middle!  

But you don’t have to use any words if you don’t want to!  I made this one with french knots and straight stitch arrows.

And isn’t that fabric the best?  It makes me super happy!

I found this pattern on Craftsy.  AND it was on sale!  Anyone who has ever made a quilt knows that it can get price-y.  That is why I prefer to go with quilt kits to try and keep the price down.

Piecing the quilt is such a challenge.  Your fabric cuts have to be precise in order for it to turn out square.  Creating these pinwheels was so much fun though!  I loved watching it come together block by block.

The one thing I absolutely despise about quilting is all of the ironing.  So much ironing.  You iron after every seem.  It gets tedious.  But it is a must.  If you skip the ironing, you are condemning your quilt to a lifetime of puckering.

I had this quilted at a local shop in southwest Missouri and they do such a fantastic job!  They also did the quilting on my Puddle Jumping Quilt.  (You can check out that quilt HERE!)

It turned out better than I could have imagined!  I love the backing too!

Binding the quilt is the best part!  It provides a completeness that appeals to my OCD on the deepest level.

I can’t wait to give this to my friend!  I know she will love it!

Download directions:  Click link above.  This will bring up a Google Drive folder.  Click the download icon at the top.  This will save the folder to your computer.  Simply open the file and print!  YOU DO NOT NEED TO ASK PERMISSION TO VIEW.

{I’m going to give you a brief overview of transferring these patterns.  I am by NO means an expert.  I’ve included videos below of some basic stitches to help you get started.}

You are going to start by tracing your pattern with a pencil onto a piece of fabric.

Place fabric in an embroidery hoop.  This Dritz hoop is the best I’ve ever used!

I used a satin stitch for the “hello” and the floral design at the bottom.  You can see how to do that HERE.

“Spring” is done in a back stitch.  You can learn how to do that HERE.

Choose which color embroidery floss you want to use.  For these patterns, I used DMC floss colors 602, 702, 704, 744, and 962.

The great thing about embroidery is you get to make it up as you go along!  You don’t have to do it in a set way.  Each person comes up with something different and I love it!

I used this pattern from Thimble Blossoms.  Bonnie and Camille is one of my favorite fabric designers.  The prints are so bright and colorful.  Plus the patterns are very modern.

I was a little intimidated by the blocks.  But once I got a couple made, they started coming together quickly.

The blocks were more time consuming than I’m accustomed too.  With the size and bulk, there was no way I could quilt this one on my own.  I sent it to a local quilt shop and then did a beautiful job!

I love the swirls!  They remind me of ripples in the water.  Perfect for a quilt named Puddle Jumping.

The colors are so crisp and compliment each other well.

It really is addicting.  I’m getting ready to start another one!

As I sit here writing this post, I am caught up in feelings of reminiscence and nostalgia.  You see, this post is both a Mother’s Day and wedding post – a tribute to my mom.  As you know, my sister got married last weekend.  What you may not have known was that it would have been my mother’s 62nd birthday.  My sister wanted her “something old” to be a tribute to our mom.  She wanted to create handkerchiefs from my mom’s wedding dress.  At first, I was appalled.  I did NOT want to cut up her dress.  Then my husband said, “Are you upset about cutting the dress or that you didn’t think of it for ours?”  Well played, sir.  It hurts my heart that I didn’t think of it for my own wedding.  As Jennifer’s wedding drew closer, she gave up on the idea because she did not think there would be enough time to create ten of these herself.  That’s when my dad and I decided to make these Monogrammed Handkerchiefs for her.

 So I took a trip to St. Louis to my dad’s house.  We got on Facetime and opened up Mom’s dress box.

Jennifer wanted me to try on the dress.  It fit perfectly!  Which is kinda cool because it was custom made for my mom.

(Pardon my lack of make-up, it was late evening.)

After inspecting the dress, I had a scathingly brilliant idea.  The train was removable.  We could create the handkerchiefs from the train and maintain the integrity of the dress!

The train was a lace overlay with lace trim.  All handstitched.  Dad and I had our work cut out for us.

First, we had to remove the lace trim.

Then we had to remove the lace over lay from the other fabric.

 Once it was all taken apart, we cut 10 inch x 10 inch squares out of the cream fabric and 10 inch by 10 inch squares from the lace.

Next came the painful experience of trying to configure my embroidery machine.  This was the first time I had used it!  It took 5 hours and lots of math to get it centered and just how we wanted it.

We embroidered by mom’s monogram followed by the wedding date (which is also her birthday).

I bought the dissolving stabilizer.  Once it was dissolved, we let them air dry overnight.  The next morning, we ironed them flat and began sewing.

I attached the monogrammed piece of fabric and the lace (right sides together).

Stitch around all edges leaving a 5 inch gap to turn right side out.

Turn right side out.  Fold the rough edges in and pin in place.  Top stitch around all four edges to give it a completed look.

To finish it, I handstitched some of the lace to the corner.

The packaging is from Le Box Boutique on Etsy!  Love that shop and she lives close to me!

My sister created an insert for each package that read as below…

And we handed them out at the rehearsal dinner to all of my mom’s immediate family.

The cool thing is that it is a gift from all FOUR of us which hasn’t happened in over 25 years.  Dad and I made these handkerchiefs from Mom’s dress for Jennifer’s wedding.  A great tribute to our mom for Mother’s Day and Jennifer’s special day!

Congrats Jennifer and Steve!  I know Mom is watching over you!
