Retro {Kitchen} Decor

Almost Friday…thank goodness!

If you’ve followed me for awhile, you know that we rent our house.  One of the issues I brought to the owners’ attention was the backsplash in the kitchen.  When they built the house, they installed the adhesive tiles behind the stove.  Needless to say, the tiles began to peel off the wall due to using the stovetop.

A couple of weeks ago, we got “our” new backsplash…and I HATE it!

{Bear with me as a rant for a minute}

The backsplash itself is a pretty cool, retro subway tile.  However, the job was done very poorly and it shows.  Instead of working from the top down, he started in the middle and worked out.  The top row of tile was haphazardly applied and it is laying on top of the next row.  In the middle, he didn’t follow the same block pattern and that row lines up with the next one.

My husband keeps reminding me that it’s not our house and I shouldn’t get upset.  Well, I’m not upset.  I’m annoyed.

To hide the mistakes, I decided to come up with my own decorative solution.  I know you have all seen the paper mache letters at Hobby Lobby and a variety of other crafts stores.   To match the retro, diner feel the tile gives off, I decided to make a faux metallic “EAT” sign – retro kitchen decor!

 I simply bought the letters and spray painted them chrome.  The whole project cost $10 and took very little time.  And I like it!

I used Command stickies to adhere the letters to the tile.  {I figure once they start falling off, I will be ready for a change anyway.}

I guess I should be thanking the guy who installed the tile.  Thanks tile guy, for providing me with the inspiration/excuse to craft and blog about it!  =)

Is anyone else as detail oriented as me?

    I love the letters, they definitely make you focus on them instead! But I’m sorry the backsplash isn’t how you want it. And yes, that would definitely bug me too, I’m detail oriented like that :-)

    Yes, that would drive me crazy as well! We rented last year and so I know how frustrating it is when you can’t do anything about it. But you have a great solution there – those letters are fabulous!!

    I LOVE how this turned out my friend! I’ve seen those paper mache letters at Jo Ann’s for a while now and have wanted to do something with them! I think they’d be cute in the Laundry room too :)

    Love your letters! And yes, that would annoy me to no end!!
    When our backsplash was installed, the “expert” went out of town and left the “finishing touches” to his employee. After living with uneven and HUGE grout lines for a few months, I made him come back, tear it out, and do it RIGHT!
    So I definitely feel your annoyance on this one. Great solution though to help camouflage, I’d never have known if you hadn’t pointed it out.
