Clothespin Chandelier

I LOVE it when I get a new catalog in the mail!  It’s full of eye candy, inspiration, and ideas!  When the Fall 2012 Pottery Barn Kids Catalog appeared in the mailbox, I couldn’t wait to look through it!  I stumbled across this page and was INSTANTLY drawn to the clothespin chandelier and knew I had to re-create it!

Seriously, how cute is that?  It couldn’t be that hard to re-create!At first, I did it just like the picture, plain with no decoration which helped with knowing how many clothespins to use for each hoop.  I loved it but I wasn’t IN love with it (kind of like the old boyfriend you couldn’t imagine marrying). My little boy’s play table and chairs are red and blue with star cut outs which is from where the inspiration came.  (Hang with me – you’ll see.)

Wanna make your own Clothespin Chandelier?

Here’s what you need:
2 rolls of washi tape (got mine at Target in the Crayola section)
Clothespins (close to 200)
Cutting mat and blade
Wooden embroidery hoops (I bought a three pack from Michael’s which included the 14 inch and 7 inch hoops you will see later in the post)
(Embellishment: optional)

I started by placing the clothespin on the washi tape.

Using your Exacto knife – cut around the clothespin.

See how nice and uniformly covered it is?

The best part is – the part you just cut off will cover the other side of the clothespin!  (I covered both sides so that when you looked at it, the inside of the chandelier didn’t appear unfinished.)

This part took the longest.  Reed was all wrapped up in Kung Fu Panda so I took advantage and let Po babysit while I cut out all the washi tape.  (Don’t judge – I was at the dining room table 10 feet away…LOL)

Now you have a rather large pile of washi taped clothespins.

Begin placing the clothespins on the hoop.  Go all the way down to the metal springy part.

To make it level, I did a couple on one side and then added a couple to the other side.  I just kept going back and forth until the entire hoop was covered.

Repeat the process on the second hoop.  I had painted some wooden stars blue to match Reed’s table.  I hot glued them in place.

Now here’s where things get tricky – putting it together with the twine.  Because my husband told me I was a “big girl” and could figure this out without his assistance, I had to get creative.  I found two tupperware containers in the cabinet that were roughly the same height as the clothespins.  I set the bigger hoop on the two containers and placed the smaller hoop in the middle.

Next, I took the twine and started on the outside hoop threaded it under the inner hoop and out the other side of the big hoop as seen in Figure 1.  Tie off the twine around the outer embroidery hoop – making sure to keep the twine taut.  (That is a tongue twister – try saying it out loud.  Told ya.)

Repeat the same process to create an “X” in the inner hoop.  The beauty of the inner hoop, is that now you can slide it around to get it level!  See, I am a big girl!

Add some more twine to hang it.  I used four points of twine again for stability and to keep level.
